Trashy beauty: The Beach Garbage Hotel, Madrid

What would it look like if we took all the trash in the world and made art out of it? It may look like this:

When German artist, Ha Schult, got fed up with the ocean’s polluted waters, he decided to make a statement and in this case, a hotel, out of debris he collected from waste dumps and flea markets in Europe. His latest piece entitled, the Corona Save the Beach Garbage Hotel, is located in Madrid, Spain and is currently on exhibit and open for business until January 23rd.

According to Schult, roughly 30% to 40% of the objects used were found on beaches in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. The hotel has five double rooms which have been booked up since it opened, and all of the trash has been disinfected. The hotel has attracted environmentalists and famous faces like model, Helena Christensen and jewelry designer, Jade Jagger.

The idea of recycling waste is not only brilliant, it may be the future. Through his art, Schult manages to open the world’s eyes to the fact that ocean pollution is very real. This is one of many “trashy” installations of Schult’s. For more information on his art, visit his uber-cool website at Ha Schult Online.

I love it, love it. A highly visual display that makes a statement. I should stop by more often. Sorry I let you fall off my radar.
