Southwest spring beauty: Early signs in Santa Fe

Muscari and leaves

It's spring in Santa Fe, NM and despite the lack of precipitation, Mother Nature has once again found a way to survive, even in the smallest, driest spaces.

Euphorbia rigida

The Santa Fe River is a mere trickle from the scant snowfall we received this past winter. Signs of water are sparse, but hearty fighters like dandelions, euphorbia rigida and miniature sedums are poking up from underneath rocks and unraked leaves from last year's blustery fall.

Friend or foe?... the dandelion

Sedum

It may still be a little bit before the fruit tree blossoms blanket the dried chamisa and adobe landscape, but there are a few early bloomers in town.

Apricot blossom
White cherry blossom

Blooming vinca vine

Bearded Iris are getting ready...
